After spending £30,000 to get a full head of hair, Wayne Rooney may be a little disappointed that his new look already appears to be ageing him.

The Manchester United and England striker began the new Premier League season by scoring in Manchester Utd's 2-1 win at West Bromwich Albion on Sunday afternoon.

And while football fans were no longer able to see his receding hairline, they also could not help but notice the tint of his new hair – which appeared to include areas of light grey.

Rooney had the treatment at a central London clinic at the beginning of June.

In the days following the procedure, he revealed: 'Just to confirm to all my followers I have had a hair transplant. I was going bald at 25, why not? I'm delighted with the result.'

Rooney had a follicular transfer in which hairs are moved from donor areas – usually at the back of the head – and then replanted in bald areas.

New growth: Wayne posted up a picture to show how his hair transplant had progressed while on holiday in Barbados - but his head looked a bit purple
